9.Semiotics in Poster and Promotional Artwork
Semiotics helps explain how images communicate meaning beyond what is literally shown. For my own poster, I analysed the semiotic choices used in professional film artwork to understand how they target audience emotions.
I studied:
- Colour psychology — how red suggests danger, green suggests unease, white suggests purity or mystery
- Symbolism — objects that hint at themes without revealing the full story
- Body language — confident vs vulnerable poses
- Gaze direction — looking into camera vs looking away
- Typography — serif, sans-serif, handwritten, bold, minimalist
- Composition — rule of thirds, symmetry, depth
I created an expanded semiotics mood board based on these findings. This includes:
- font samples
- colour palette examples
- symbolic images
- framing ideas
- placement tests for titles, taglines, and credits
Semiotic analysis allows me to design my poster with purpose. Every element becomes a deliberate message, contributing to a cohesive and meaningful promotional identity.
