9.Semiotics in Poster and Promotional Artwork

Semiotics helps explain how images communicate meaning beyond what is literally shown. For my own poster, I analysed the semiotic choices used in professional film artwork to understand how they target audience emotions.

I studied:

  • Colour psychology — how red suggests danger, green suggests unease, white suggests purity or mystery
  • Symbolism — objects that hint at themes without revealing the full story
  • Body language — confident vs vulnerable poses
  • Gaze direction — looking into camera vs looking away
  • Typography — serif, sans-serif, handwritten, bold, minimalist
  • Composition — rule of thirds, symmetry, depth

I created an expanded semiotics mood board based on these findings. This includes:

  • font samples
  • colour palette examples
  • symbolic images
  • framing ideas
  • placement tests for titles, taglines, and credits

Semiotic analysis allows me to design my poster with purpose. Every element becomes a deliberate message, contributing to a cohesive and meaningful promotional identity.
