7.Genre Conventions and Visual Codes
To create promotional material that communicates clearly to an audience, I needed to understand the conventions and visual codes of my film’s genre. Audiences judge a film’s tone instantly — often within a split second — using visual cues such as colour, composition, and symbolism.
I researched several professional posters and trailers within my chosen genre and broke them down using media-language analysis. I focused on:
- Lighting conventions (e.g. chiaroscuro for thriller; neon for sci-fi)
- Colour meanings (dark blues for mystery, warm tones for nostalgia)
- Camera angles (low angles for power, close-ups for tension)
- Common props (weapons, keys, masks, diary pages)
- Character framing (isolated, central, facing away, half-lit faces)
I also studied industry expectations. For example, thrillers often include fragmented imagery or single symbolic objects (like a phone, mask, or shadow), while dramas rely on expressive character portraits.
After this analysis, I decided how closely my promotional package will follow these conventions. Conforming helps audiences immediately recognise the genre; subverting expectations can create intrigue and originality.
